Everything Under the Sun

In time away from home this year to care for a family member, my artmaking narrowed to my sketchbook and my focus turned to a readily available subject - trees. I have always loved to draw them, but my focus became intense, as I noticed particularly gorgeous and twisted-by-time trees first while waiting at the doctor’s office, then while walking in the park, and then pretty much everywhere.

When I was able to return to the studio, what began as line drawings evolved into the fully developed collagraphs for this new series. With the addition of the sun and color to the images, they became a meditation on the curious nature of the passage of time, how it changes from circumstance to circumstance, event to event. Under the sun’s gaze, the trees stand as witnesses bearing all the marks and scars that become a beautiful and poignant recording of that passage.
